What that actually means

Most cardio equipment works one part of the body harder than others. A treadmill is predominantly lower body. A rowing bike is predominantly lower body. An elliptical gets close, but the movement pattern is linear and constrained.


Rowing is different. A single stroke requires your legs to drive, your core to stabilise, and your arms and back to pull, in one continuous, coordinated movement. Done correctly, nothing is passive. The result is a training session that covers more physiological ground in less time than almost any other form of cardio available.


The 84% figure refers to major muscle groups recruited during rowing. In practice, that includes your quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes through the leg drive; your erector spinae, rhomboids, and trapezius through the back pull; your biceps and forearms through the arm draw; and your abdominals and obliques holding the whole stroke together. It is not a figure borrowed from a brochure. It is why coaches have used rowing for cross-training across virtually every sport for decades.
