Our approach combines responsibly sourced natural materials, renewable energy, considered engineering and skilled craftsmanship to create fitness equipment designed for many years of use.
Wood with a Future
Wood is central to our identity. We value it for its strength, warmth, beauty and renewable nature.
As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store carbon within the wood. When that wood is transformed into a durable product, much of the carbon remains stored throughout the product’s useful life. This makes responsible forest management—and designing products that will be kept for many years—especially important.
The hardwood used in our wooden WaterRower rowing machines is sourced from sustainably managed forests in the Appalachian region of the United States.
NOHRD sources its timber from renewable stocks in the United States and Germany, selecting solid hardwood for its durability, performance and distinctive character.
Natural variations in color and grain mean that no two pieces are exactly alike. Each product is shaped by the material from which it is made.
WATERROWER — Rhode Island, USA
WaterRower rowing machines have been crafted in Rhode Island since 1988.
From selecting the wood to assembling and testing the finished machine, every stage is approached with care. Combining American hardwood with local manufacturing creates a close connection between material, maker and finished product.
NOHRD — Nordhorn, Germany
NOHRD equipment is handcrafted at our manufacturing facility in Nordhorn, Germany.
An on-site sawmill provides greater control over how timber is selected, stored and processed. Wood offcuts and shavings created during production are collected and used to fuel a biomass furnace, generating heat for the facility.
This turns excess production material into useful energy, reduces waste and lowers reliance on fossil-fuel heating. Rooftop solar panels also generate a substantial proportion of the electricity used by the facility.

Renewable electricity, solar generation and biomass heating help reduce reliance on conventional energy sources. Careful material selection and the reuse of production offcuts help us make better use of the resources already available to us.
Replacement parts, product support and upgrade options then help customers maintain their equipment and extend its useful life.
